We have been in the Book of Ecclesiastes during Sunday School. The theme of the study is life is meaningless without God. To be more precise life is meaningless without a relationship with Jesus Christ, which in turn grants us access to God.
Solomon dabbled in many aspects of life to find meaning and purpose: pleasure, human wisdom, work, and wealth. Solomon found that all of these pursuits will not satisfy and give meaning and purpose to one’s life. Throughout this book Solomon uses the phrase “under the sun”. This is what we would call today a secular or even an atheistic world view. Meaning that this life/existence on earth (“under the sun”) is all there is. If this were true life indeed would have no meaning or purpose, because no matter how much we make, or who we are with we typically still feel let down.
Only an encounter with the Savior resulting in salvation will allow us to have purpose in life. Because then we have been reconnected with the One Who created us. Only in that connection to the One Who created life and meaning will we find meaning and purpose.
